My Journey to “Change the Now”

My Journey to “Change the Now”

Georgian College is the one and only Canadian college to be designated as a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka U. As a Change Leader and Director of Georgian’s Centre for Changemaking and Social Innovation, it’s my job to #changethenow. I get to work with students, staff, faculty and community leaders to figure out ways to build healthier, more resilient places to live. Literally….that’s what I do…best job ever!

Whether its through Georgian’s Community Impact Lab’s NOURISH framework, our innovative approach to social enterprise, capacity building, or through communities of practice run by faculty, I work with a team of teams to spark innovation and create spaces for everyone to contribute.

This year, we have decided to add to our team of teams. Supported by Ashoka Canada, Georgian invited the Simcoe County District School Board to look at the potential of creating a REGION of changemakers. What if we could offer pathways, creative spaces and opportunities for students from kindergarten to college to become changemakers? Think of a world where everyone believed they were changemakers and they had the tools and resources to make change happen. Think of the possibilities when young minds are given a platform to creatively tackle wicked social problems.

So that’s what we are going to do- co-create an experiential learning vehicle for change… the #CHANGETHENOW movement. The key activity in the #CHANGETHENOW movement is a social hack called The Changemaker Challenge– a series of events designed to help us envision and create community-changing solutions to the complex and wicked problem of social isolation. And as with most innovations, we are creating and implementing in real-time. The first deep dive for our collaborating educators and community leaders is happening Sept. 28th, 2018.

So the word is getting out, our newly expanded team of teams is engaged, and we have no idea where this will lead…but here we go. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, here is a great resource for educators- “My Changemaker Toolkit”.
